Tarnita Lake in Cluj County is a beautiful lake which has an area of about 215 ha with a length of 8 km and a maximum depth of over 70 meters. The water from the Tarnita dam is brought by Somesul Cald River.

Tarnita Dam was built in 1974, with the purpose of producing electricity. Its shape is similar to a spring, with a crest length of 237 m and height of 97 m.

If you’re a tourist and you are staying in Cluj Napoca for a few days, it is worth admiring the scenery both day and night. In the evening, the landscape is striking beautiful due to the contrast between the dark surrounding forest and illuminated dam. (You can do a round-trip route from Cluj Napoca up to 1h).
Location and presentation of the area
Tarnita Lake is the second lake in the village after Somesul Rece village in Gilau from Cluj Napoca. The distance between the dam of Lake Tarnita and Cluj Napoca is about 27 km from entering the dam and about 35 km to the zone of „Lake tail” where the lake shrinks and becomes a river that continuously supplies the dam with fresh water from Marisel Mountains.
The beauty of the area is known both by locals and by people from Cluj who visit it, especially on weekends, and represents an important entertainment.

Being a beautiful area of the Apuseni Mountains with many unique landscapes and near Cluj Napoca, on the shore of Tarnita Lake were built many villas, pensions and cabins.
Recreational activities that are carried out on the lake are swimming, fishing, boating or jetski, but most take place in an unorganized framework.
It is said that the bottom of the lake there are fish of over 1-2 m in length.
